Uptown Neighborhood
Few neighborhoods in Dallas have the history and the colorful stories that Uptown does. Located immediately to the north of Dallas, and part of the larger Oak Lawn neighborhood, Uptown is an area that has gone through a complete metamorphosis over the last 30 years.
Uptown was originally a working class neighborhood that fell outside of the original Dallas city limits. One of the major reasons the early governments of Dallas was hesitant to incorporate Uptown was because it was almost exclusively populated with various minorities. The early Hispanic population in Dallas called the western side of Uptown home and although they were considered outcasts by early Dallas residents, they managed to build a prosperous business district that still attracted the predominantly white residents of Dallas proper. On the east side of Uptown lived a population that was predominantly former African-American slaves and was considered a Freedman’s town. With these two populations making up the majority of old Uptown, the area was considered a pox on Dallas, but things soon changed.
Uptown is now one of the most upscale and desirable places to live in all of Dallas. It is served extensively by the DART system and is considered to be the safest and best place to walk, jog and bike in the whole Dallas Metroplex. Residents of Uptown are known throughout Dallas as being the least likely to own cars since the excellent public transit, the ease of walking and the prime location right down town make commuting to work a snap.
Uptown is also one of the most architecturally beautiful spots in Texas. The combination of old and preserved brick buildings among the new, gleaming office towers and residential towers makes Uptown a truly beautiful spot to live. A trip down Blackburn Street reveals a beautiful combination of 100 year old homes with new, multi-use towers that combine environmentally friendly construction and living with commercial space. The actual size of Uptown isn’t very large, but you may find after moving here that it has everything you need!
Residents of Uptown have a few choices on where to send their kids for school. There is the main high school, North Dallas High, but there are also magnet schools that many local kids attend. There is even a very well known and respected private school, Holy Trinity, that is the choice of many Uptown parents. New residents should be happy to learn that all available school options are highly ranked when it comes to quality of education.
Finally, Uptown also has a good amount of nightlife. A fine selection of cheap eats like diners and sandwich shops as well as fine dining and romantic getaways are sprinkled throughout Uptown. If dance clubs and fashionable bars are more to your liking, you won’t have to wander far to find the place for you.
Uptown may seem like an exclusive urban oasis, but affordable rent still exists in this wonderful neighborhood. But prime spaces are running out, if you are thinking of moving to Uptown, you had better move fast!
