Moving Tips

Dallas is a prime destination, with many people moving there every month. With fantastic attractions and business opportunities, it's no wonder it's such a popular place to live. There are number of different neighborhoods to make your home in, whether you choose to live in the Arts Center District, East Dallas, or Lake Highlands, you'll find an incredible diversity of accommodations, restaurants, cafes, schools and more. Dallas is a great place to move to and a few helpful tips will make moving a lot easier.

Mark your boxes clearly; unmarked boxes only lead to confusion once you get into your new place. Marking your boxes will let you organize them by room when you unload, as well.

Disconnect washers, dryers and refrigerator hoses. This will save valuable time when moving day gets there. There's nothing more frustrating that getting half your stuff loaded in the moving truck and having to stop to undo a hose.

Small items must be packed in sealed boxes. Open boxes, crates or carriers are great for large items, but small ones can fall out and get damaged during the moving process.

Jewelry, important papers and safe deposit contents should be packed and kept with you during your move. A locked briefcase is ideal for this sort of thing, though a fireproof lock box is just as handy.

Stage your boxes in a central location before moving day. This will help you load your stuff more easily, without as much lifting and carrying.

Don't spend money on boxes unless you have to. Check with local businesses to find out if they can give you any boxes. Shoe stores are a great place to pick up boxes of all sizes, especially if you catch them on a day when they've received a shipment.

Make sure you have plenty of padding material for fragile items. Bubble wrap, foam padding, even old newspaper can be used. Pack your fragile items in bubble wrap and use the newspaper the same way. Adding padding to a half full box can help keep the weight from shifting while you're carrying it.

Always reinforce the bottom seam of you boxes with an extra layer of tape. This will keep the bottom of the box from tearing open while you have your hands full.

Mark each box with the room it goes in. Doing this will make unloading much faster and easier.

Don't overload your boxes. You can combine heavy and light items into a single box, that way you don't strain your back lifting boxes that weigh as much as the moving truck.

Remember to pack a bag with any necessities you'll need while you're moving. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant; these things come in handy, even when you're moving.
