Dallas Sports
Very few spots on the North American landscape have the variety and the quality of sports as the Dallas Metroplex. Dallas sports all four major professional sports teams: the world famous Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, the recent world champion Dallas Stars of the NHL, the Dallas Mavericks, who recently finished with the best record in the NBA and made a trip to the NBA finals, and the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball. Not only are there only a few cities that boast a team in every sport, almost no other city has experienced the winning traditions that these teams have over the last 20 years.
The NBA Mavericks and NHL Stars share a building in downtown Dallas called The American Airlines Center. This state of the art, 20,000 seat arena not only plays host to 40+ basketball and hockey games per year, but also houses major events like Disney on Ice, concerts and public speaking events. The arena is even home to the local Arena Football team, The Dallas Desperados.
The Dallas Cowboys currently call Dallas Stadium in nearby Irvin home, but it won’t be home much longer. The stadium with a hole on the roof is being replaced by the most expensive stadium ever built on American soil in 2009 in Arlington. The new stadium will have a retractable roof and is already scheduled to host a Super Bowl in the near future. Next door to the incredible new Cowboys stadium in Arlington is The Ballpark at Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers. Current United States President George W. Bush once ran this team before he sought a career in politics, and although the team is struggling to get back to the top of the standings, the Rangers did have a run of several consecutive division championships and playoff appearances in the early 1990’s.
But just like any city, there is so much more to the local sports scene than what you see on television. Amateur sports are a huge part of what makes Dallas special. Rice University has been playing big time college football for a century and the Rice baseball is consistently ranked in the top 25. Texas Christian University is located in Ft. Worth and is a burgeoning national football powerhouse.
No discussion on Dallas area sports is complete without mentioning the excitement of high school athletics. If you’re in Texas and it’s a Friday night in the fall, chances are, everyone you know will be down at the football field watching high school football. The sport is akin to religion in all of Texas, and other sports like basketball and baseball have loyal followings as well.
Dallas also has an extensive network of bike paths and parks for a pick up game of touch football or just a good place to go jogging.
If you’re a sports nut, it is hard to find a better place to call home than Dallas. The year-round mild climate makes outdoor activities possible any time, and with a full pro sports slate, you’ll always have a local team to follow.
