Colleges and Universities of Dallas

Like any other great metropolitan area, the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth have more than their fare share of great institutes of higher learning. There are big time schools with big time athletic departments, and smaller schools that only appeal to a particular trade. Let’s take a closer look at what colleges and universities are located inside the Dallas Metroplex.

First and foremost, the three schools that most people have heard of in Dallas are Southern Methodist University in University Park, just north or downtown Dallas, Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and the University of North Texas in Denton. All three schools field major Division 1 athletic teams, including immensely popular college football teams. The most successful of the three teams is TCU. They compete in the Mountain West Conference and are considered to be one of the top universities that isn’t already in a Bowl Championship Series conference. SMU, on the other hand, was a full fledged football powerhouse in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In fact, no school in all of college football won more games from 1980-1985 than SMU. But a slew of NCAA violations have essentially doomed SMU’s football program and they are consistently one of the worst teams in the nation. The University of North Texas competes in the Sun Belt conference and is an up and coming program. They recently moved from the small school 1-AA designation to the major 1-A level. They are currently enjoying a streak of four consecutive Sun Belt championships.

Not all the schools in the Dallas area field sports teams, however. The city of Dallas alone has 20 different universities and colleges, or branch campuses of schools in other parts of the state, such as a University of North Texas campus and a branch campus of the University of Texas. There are art schools, such as the Art Institute of Dallas, and religious schools like Dallas Baptist.

The city of Fort Worth has several schools, as well. TCU is the biggest school in Fort Worth, with an enrollment of over 8,000. In all, there are 10 universities, colleges and branch campuses in Fort Worth, including Brite Divinity School, Landmark Baptist Theological Seminary and Texas Wesleyan University.

There are also a number of excellent schools on the outskirts of the Dallas area. The University of North Texas is one of the largest, but there are many more. There are currently 30+ schools that cater to every major under the sun. There is also a comprehensive community college system for those that want to earn college credit but aren’t quite sure what they want to major in.

Every year, tens of thousands of kids from all over the country flock to Dallas to attend school. Thanks to the wide range of options available to every student, you can study practically any major you want in the Dallas Metroplex.
